808’s isn’t so bad!

15 12 2008

I feel like it’s time for me to make myself clear about an album opinion as seen in this post to weeks ago. As you can see I listed Kanye West’s new 808’s & Heartbreak as one of the “not so good” cds. After two weeks of listing I have to admit I was wrong, or maybe just not clear enough. The album (especially the first half) is really good. I still think that Kanye’s a better rapper than singer, and I’d love to hear a new album that’s more like Graduation. Nevertheless the new cd is an interesting and – at least for me – inspiring experiment. Some of the songs are catchy, but what I like most about this album is the artist’s determination in using the Roland TR-808 as drum machine for all the tracks. If you check out the info about the TR-808 you’ll notice that it’s a pretty basic piece of equipment with mainly 16 programable buttons for the drum sounds!

Now the best part: if you’re a Mac user you already have GarageBand. What I found out was that the TR-808 emulator is available as part of the Remix Jam Pack from Apple! So you can simply make the exactly same sounds and if you’re good enough, produce something that sounds very much like Kanye’s latest album. Now that’s why I love Macs!

Co na Maca?

14 12 2008

No niestety nie.

W końcu system dali po polsku, to i kontrole pisowni by mogli gdyby chcieli?

Aktualne newsy, poradniki i nawet podcasty video – z tymże tych ostatnich nie miaÅ‚em okazji sprawdzić bo hotelowy internet pozostawia wiele do życzenia.

News for November 18th

18 11 2008

I got back from the beach, had my lunch and now it’s time for the after-noon tea. I still don’t like the hotels, but I must admit it’s very comfortable to live here. And it makes me lazy, which is probably a bad thing.

So here are my readings for today. I started off by reading about the repressions of freedom of speech in today’s Russia. Recently a journalist has been seriously injured for his criticism of some of the Moscow’s bosses and politicians. When I read that, a slide show on the same page led me to these great photos of wrestling Pakistanis. Obviously wrestling is their national sport and they’ve been doing it for over thousand years. Now a little no tech news. RED is soon releasing a new digital video cam aimed at the professional market with its… 261 mega-pixel resolution! Should be enough for a while, I think. But you shouldn’t make stupid comments when it comes to technology, like that one famous quote of Bill Gates about “640K ought to be enough for anybody” (for those who don’t get it: we’re talking about 640 kilobytes, 0,6 megabyte, okay?). Yeah funny, except he never said that – he says now. Something else he said is this:

“To create a new standard, it takes something that’s not just a little bit different; it takes something that’s really new and really captures people’s imagination — and the Macintosh, of all the machines I’ve ever seen, is the only one that meets that standard.” – Bill Gates, at a conference on the Macintosh (1984) Quicktime clip at osdata.com (1.1 MB)

And this one is as much true today as it was in 1984. Amazing foreseeing there, Bill! One last tech thing is this cool app for the Mac which is made for writing long texts, such as books or research thesis. It seems like it has everything to organize the text and even the references (crucial when writing a thesis). Check out the Scrivener.

Of course I couldn’t stay away from Wikipedia today either. I read on some of the Pan-Slavic topics and found something interesting: have you heard about the Czech Corridor? According to Wiki, there was a proposal which “would have carved out an area of land to connect Kingdom of Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia.” And thus connecting the Western and Eastern Slavs with the brothers in the South, just as it was before Hungarians invaded the central Europe in the 9th century! Comments on this one folks?

My portfolio’s available!

15 11 2008

Sorry about this long break. Now I’m back again and first thing’s first: I decided to make my portfolio available. You can find the link in the main menu, or use this one.

So we’re in the middle of november, time’s running really fast now and Christmas is approaching soon. I’ve been keeping myself busy guiding tours in Jerusalem and visiting the beach in Sharm in my spare time. Weather is beautiful and reminds of normal summer in Poland (or a really good one in Sweden, if you rather think that way). Israel on the other hand got colder, with temperatures around 15-20, so I’m finally making use of the jackets I brought with me to Egypt.

On the other hand I wish I was in Halmstad right now, at least for a while. Two reasons: 1) there’s finally an Apple reseller in town, and 2) Max’ famous Frisco Cheese ‘n Bacon hamburger – only available in Sweden.

Today I’m off to Jerusalem, and when I’m back Tuesday I’m looking forward to seeing my dad who’s coming to Sharm for a week. That’s it for now!

Polaroid

31 10 2008

Big news today: I got a new job! Early this morning I returned from my first trip with tourists from Jerusalem and Bethlehem (1 day trip). It wasn’t so bad for the first time, so I actually consider continuing this for a while on. The only downside is the border control –  both Israeli and Egyptians piss me off. Not to mention the Russian tourists that are everywhere and create many-hour-long lines at the borders. Just go back to Mother Russia please…

Anyway, while surfing the Cloud today I found this cool application for the Mac that makes your photos look a bit nostalgically and artsy with the Polaroid-look. The process itself, using the application, is fun as well and looks really nice on the desktop:

So here are some samples!

There is also an iPhone application that says to do pretty much the same, and you can speed up the “film” development by… shaking the iPhone! Pretty neat… :)

New MacBooks!

15 10 2008

Yesterday, just as expected, Apple updated it’s line of notebook computers, giving updates to MacBooks and MacBook Pros. The new machines are hot and share the design of the iMac’s latest incarnation. They look amazing! I’ve been using MacBook for over two years now and I can tell that the new update fixes all three major flaws I’ve had with this machine: 1) screen, 2) graphics performance and 3) the plastic case which gave up after two years of heavy using and is now covered with plastic tape in various places that keeps the whole computer together. The last thing sounds really bad for sure, but I can tell that it occurs only when you use the computer more than it probably was designed to. MacBook is a home computer, and if you need a stable machine for everyday work, there has been MacBook Pro, with it’s aluminum case.

However, now it’s over and MacBook has received a killer update. The screen is now LED, the case is made of aluminum and the new graphic board is now nVidia -made and said to be 5x faster then the Intel-produced graphic in my generation of MacBooks. Sweet! It looks as MacBook has become a MacBook Pro lite, there are not that many differences between the machines anymore. The new MacBook starts from $1299!

Off to Jerusalem

11 10 2008

Hey there. As some might have noticed, I still haven’t uploaded any photos from Cairo. The thing is: there is not good way to make slideshows at WordPress. They even block (do not allow!) to insert third-party code from e.g. Picasa Web or Flickr! So no embedded slideshow here. All I can give you is a link to Facebook where some pictures are uploaded. I’m not sure but perhaps you need an account on Facebook to view the album – let me know in the comments!

Now I’m off to Jerusalem for 2 days. Later I will let you know why… stay tuned! ;)

Another news is that Apple is holding an event this Tuesday on which they will present new notebooks (laptops)! About time for a new MacBook for me, I’ve been very happy with the one I bought over two years ago and will keep it. But if there are significant changes (multi-touch pads, serious hardware updates, or perhaps a really cool new design) I will for sure get one when I’m somewhere civilized. The prices on Apple in Sharm are well to high. Compared with that even Europe is cheap!

Bad bad bad bad bad bad news

17 09 2008

This won’t be a happy post. It won’t be long neither. All I will say is that today I was working on a PR thing for the company when my Mac suddenly froze so I had to kill it by shutting it off. Now I see how some of you laugh: “haha there you go, even your fantastic Apple computer died!”. Yeah, maybe it did, cause when I reboot all I see is a pretty neat icon with a blinking question mark, which represents “I can’t find any disk to boot from”. And that’s true, my hard drive appears to be dead. Damn..great timing. Just for your information, the hard drive isn’t original Apple, it’s a 250Gb Toshiba drive I put in two years ago, and I knew it would die some day. Luckily I have Time Machine backup, which means it will be easy to get up and running again. Badly though, the last backup is 5 days old…

So tonight I’m going to Jerusalem to look for a) a new hard drive and b) some screw drivers cause I left my set back home in Sweden. Great. Sweet. Fantastic. I love this. Pray for me.

And I will pray. I’m a bit confused to whom I should pray though, considering I’m European, currently stay in Egypt and hope to find everything I need to fix this in Israel…

WTF Microsoft?

12 09 2008

The Redmond software giant have been airing their two new ads recently, certainly as a response to the long-running series of “I’m a Mac – I’m a PC”-ads from the Get a Mac campaign. I watched both and seriously, what are they talking about? Is it really a good idea to bore people out… I was hoping for something better when they announced Jerry Seinfeld would be featured in the ads, but this is not good. Check it out for yourself.

Can somebody explain to me, please? I feel confused…

Why it’s critical to put something into the right context

9 09 2008

Good morning (yeah I know, but it’s Ramadan and I like sleeping late nowadays)! Here’s a random thought for you. Buying a computer is often seen as a huge expanse. Especially when it comes to a Mac. I don’t know why but I hear it all the time from people that “oh those Macs, yeah they’re sure nice but too expansive”. Erm, well not so sure about it, take a look at the consumer MacBook or iMac and compare it with a Dell or something – and see what you get for the money, I’m talking about the build quality – and think again. And I haven’t even mention that you get rid of the probably most irritating thing with new PCs: the Windows Operating System. But check out this story.

About 26 months ago (or 780 days if you count like 26*30) I bought a than brand-new MacBook. A year later or so I wanted to upgrade it a bit with bigger hard drive and more RAM, so I bought additional. Total cost for this 26 months is something like 12.000 SEK (that’s about €1200). It’s 12.000 SEK/780 days, that is something like 15 SEK a day, or €1,50! €1,50 a day for using an amazing machine every day in two years. Still think it’s expansive? Think again!
Update: Oh yeah, almost forgot: the second season of Californication is out, get the two first episodes now! From Wikipedia: “The premiere of season two is set for September 28, 2008. The first and second episodes of season two leaked to the internet on September 8.”. Sweet!Â
